On the Machars peninsula, which stretches 20 miles south of Newton Stewart, visitors can explore picturesque harbours at Garlieston and Isle of Whithorn as well as sampling the local catch at a seafood restaurant. Known as Scotland’s Book Town, Wigtown (7 miles) boasts about 18 bookshops, arts, crafts and coffee shops and a famous book festival in September. Shop and pub 1 mile.
